Father Chandy in Israel – Tues, July 24, 2012

The Rev. Sunil Chandy

The Rev. Sunil Chandy, Rector

We arrived in Israel at the Ben Gurion International Airport at about 11:30am.  All 29 of us, some pilgrims to Israel for the first time others more seasoned travelers, were very tired after the 11 hour flight. El Al the Israeli airline asked tough questions regarding our travel plans and our intentions for visiting the Holy City.  It was difficult, but the questioning is important for air safety. Generally the experience on the airline was a very positive one.
When we arrived we were greeted by Canon Iyad Qumri, a Palestinian Christian and a certified guide and a member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. George the Martyr in Jerusalem.  Iyad, is a vivacious man who has a wonderful sense of humor as well as a thorough knowledge of Jerusalem and it’s biblical heritage.   After a large meal in a local Palestinian restaurant we were joined by The Reverend Canon John Peterson, a man who has served as Dean of St. George’s College, Jerusalem for 12 years.  John has also served as the Secretary General of the Worldwide Anglican Communion.  John over the next two weeks will give us knowledge and access to Bishops, artists and poets of Palestine (Jewish, Arabs and Christians).
Polly from our church at St. Andrew’s is with me on this trip as well as the Bishop, 6 clergy and 21 lay people of the diocese of NJ.  I will share photo’s of the experience on this blog. Please keep us all in your prayers.
