Minutes of the Vestry

November 12, 2012


A regular meeting of the Vestry of St. Andrew’s Church was called to order by Father Chandy at 7:35    p.m. following prayer led by Father Chandy.


Present:  Father Chandy, Warden:  Brian Faniro, Warden:  Patricia Jackson

Vestrypersons:  Richard Murphy, 1st term/2013, Sharon Carr, 2nd term/2014, Mark Miller, 2nd term/2014, Walt Tafe, 1st term/2014, Keith Adams, 1st term/2015, Robert Fisher, 1st term/2015, Beth Parker, 1st term/2015.  Absent:  Cynthia Regn, 1st term/2013, Christopher Miller/2013.

Church Treasurer:  John Powell


Guest/Parishioner Attendance:  None.


Minutes:  The Minutes of the regular Vestry meeting held on October 8, 2012 were sent electronically on November 8, 2012.  Keith Adams motioned to approve the Minutes, seconded by Richard Murphy.  Motion carried.


Finance/Treasurer’s Report:  Pledge collections are ahead.  Postage expenses are high, while utilities are lower than budgeted.  Keith Adams motioned to accept the report, seconded by Patricia Jackson.  Motion carried.  (A copy of the report is attached to the original Minutes.)

$197 from the Theological Education Fund will be divided between Princeton Theological Seminary and General Theological Seminary.

Nicodemus Electric installed a new fuse to power the pump to the church heater.  An open line in the thermostat for the Chapel and the Sacristy was discovered.   A quote will be solicited for a wireless system.


Group 6:  Mark Miller clarified some aspects of the proposed changes in our organizational structure. Initially vestrypersons will serve as group leaders.  Selection of leaders will come following elections at the January 2013 Annual Meeting.

Mr. Miller asked current Vestrypersons to read and respond to the Facility Use and Standard Operating Procedures forms he distributed.


Stewardship:  Approximately $170,000 has been pledged to date for 2013.  Attempts will be made to reach a goal of $200,000 by the end of the week.  The Finance Committee will put the budget together for the Vestry.


Calendar:  Upcoming events were detailed.


Warden’s Report:  New Coffee Hour procedures seem to be working well.  Attempts are being made to bring the weekly order down to a total of $40.  Attendees are being encouraged to use the donation can to help offset the costs.

Clarifications to the Facility Use Form will include food preparation rules and deposit amounts.  Patricia Jackson will amend the form.  A copy of the half sheet form for in-house groups will be requested from the Parish Administrator and sent to all vestrypersons for their perusal.  Outside groups must provide proof of insurance at the time of application.

Cost of refurbishing the seventh stained glass window will be $42,000.

The Wardens will work with the Finance Committee to transfer Father Chandy’s health coverage from the Diocesan plan to that of Mrs. Chandy.

The 2013 budget continues to be a work in progress.

Vestrypersons were asked to think of possible ways to have at least a two-year overlap period of training for a new warden.

The press release announcing the Lilly Grant recipient has been received.  A formal announcement will be made by the committee which wrote the grant application.


Rector’s Report:  The Worship Committee has recommended adding a Christmas Eve service at 7:00 p.m. in the hope of reaching those who, for personal reasons, might wish to worship in a quieter atmosphere, or are unable to attend either of the other services.

      Parishioner Cameron Uhlig is planning a light show in the church as part of the First Night activities.  Donations to St. Andrew’s will be accepted.

The Personnel Committee is updating the Job Description of the Music Director.  The outline will be presented at next month’s Vestry meeting.

Father Chandy provided the Vestry with a 2011/2012 comparison of service attendance for the last half of October and first half of November.

Charles Miller will chair the Nominating Committee.  Brian Faniro and three or four others will be asked to serve on the committee.


Old Business:  The Finance Committee still needs to acquire a church debit card.                            

     No movement has been made on the microphone system.  A suggestion was made to contact Clifford Sporn to continue with the process.

The planned February 2013 Vestry Retreat needs to be confirmed with The Evergreens facility in Moorestown.


New Business:  A request was made to give parishioners an accounting of the status of the campaign for the stained glass window restoration.

A suggestion was made to ask Police Chief Steve Martin for input on how to keep the building secure during regular hours.


Good and Welfare:  Vestrypersons shared positive ways the Good News is passed on through St. Andrew’s.


Father Chandy closed with prayer and the meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
